Hybrid racing

Running a multi-zone simulation

Strength, endurance and metcon in fixed-length zones, from registration to the overall ranking.

A multi-zone simulation takes the spirit of ATHX® events. Athletes move through zones of fixed length. A strength zone where every lifting window counts, an endurance zone where running alternates with the rower and only the distance covered counts, then a final metcon timed under a time cap. Recovery zones separate the blocks, and the overall ranking is on points. The format speaks to boxes, because it rewards the complete athlete and it can be built with the equipment of a functional fitness gym. Your standards, your levels and your prices, under an event name that belongs to you. The ATHX® format belongs to its owner, you are putting on your own hybrid race in the same spirit.

Multi-zone simulations on Throwdown

Throwdown brings together on one platform everything an ATHX® style simulation needs, from registration to the live overall leaderboard. The format, the standards and the event name stay yours.

  • Online registration

Tickets by division, payments straight into your account, promo codes and a waitlist, with no subscription.

  • Solo, pairs and levels

Beginner, intermediate and elite, solo or in men’s, women’s or mixed pairs. Each division has its own price and leaderboard.

  • One zone, one WOD

Strength is scored by load, endurance by distance, the metcon by time or reps under a time cap, with a tiebreak for each zone.

  • Wave planning

Waves are generated from the entrants, and every athlete finds their start time on their phone.

  • Judges on their phones

Each judge enters their athlete’s score on their phone, or writes it on paper for the scoring table.

  • Overall ranking on points

Points per place or a sliding scale, a weighting for each zone, and an overall ranking recalculated with every score entered.

  • Screens in the gym

The leaderboard and the schedule show live on the gym screen and on the phones of athletes and spectators.

  • Check-in and messaging

A QR code per athlete scanned at the door, and messages to every entrant or to one, with a notification on their phone.

  • Invoices and visuals

An invoice in your organisation’s name for every entry, and visuals ready to post on your social accounts before, during and after the event.

When you create the competition, pick the “Functional fitness” discipline, then create one WOD per zone with its score type.

What to keep in mind

Every zone has its score

Strength is scored on total load lifted, endurance on distance, the metcon on time or reps under a time cap. Each zone is set up like an event, with its own tiebreaks.

The overall ranking on points

Points per place, a sliding scale or the sum of places, with a weight per zone if one should count more. The overall updates with every score entered.

A functional fitness competition

The simulation is set up as a WOD competition, with no chips. The distance of the endurance zone and the metcon time are entered as scores, and every entry flows into the leaderboard.

Waves that roll on

Zones have a fixed length, so the schedule works out to the minute. A wave enters the strength zone as the previous one moves to endurance, and the schedule is generated from your entries.

Three levels on the same zones

A beginner level, an intermediate level and an elite level, solo or in men, women or mixed pairs. The loads change, the zones stay the same, and every division gets its own leaderboard.

Judges on phone or on paper

Each judge enters the validated load, the distance or the time of their athlete on their phone, or writes it on paper for the scoring table. The leaderboard shows live on the box screen and on the athletes' phones.

An event split into zones of fixed length rather than stations strung together. The format popularized by ATHX® chains a strength zone, an endurance zone and a metcon, separated by recovery zones, over about two and a half hours. Each zone gives a score, and the overall ranking is on points.

Yes. You put on your own event in the spirit of ATHX®, with your own standards, your own levels and an event name that belongs to you. Keep your communication clear and never suggest any affiliation with the circuit.

Create the competition and pick the Functional fitness discipline. Each zone becomes a WOD, scored by load for strength, by distance for endurance and by time for the metcon, and the overall ranking adds up the zones on points. No ATHX® template is provided, the format is built with your own standards and divisions.

It is set up as a functional fitness competition. Each zone is a WOD scored by load, distance or time, entered by the judges on phone or on paper, and the overall ranking adds up the zones on points.

Bars and plates for the strength zone, rowers and a running loop for endurance, and your usual metcon kit, SkiErg, boxes or kettlebells. An equipped box already has almost everything. You size the equipment on one wave, not on the total number of entries.

As many as there are stations in the busiest zone, often the bars in the strength zone or the rowers in endurance. With zones of fixed length, a new wave can enter at every zone change.

WODs, yes, in the same competition, since each zone is one. A chip-timed HYROX®-style race is created as a separate competition on the same day, with its own leaderboard.
