On a backyard you no longer measure a time, you measure presence. Every runner must complete the loop within the hour and set off again at the next bell, over and over, until one is left. Tracking that on paper after thirty hours is not realistic. The sensor records every crossing, marks who finished within the hour and produces the yard count to the second.
